Decorating a Bathroom

January 1st, 2010

Does your bathroom need a change in decor? Maybe just a few decorating additions or storage solutions?Choosing the decor for your bathroom will depend on it’s purpose. Is it a master bathroom, a child’s bathroom, or a guest bathroom? Maybe just a main bathroom in the house that everyone uses? Whatever it’s purpose, there are many ideas to decorating your bathroom that can add style, function, and storage. For a bathroom that is you own personal bathroom, such as a master bath, you might consider creating a relaxing atmosphere. Try using relaxing colors such as neutral tones, soft shades of purple or blue, or even rich shades of red and brown. Most people prefer to use colors that coordinate with the color scheme of their bedroom if it is a master bath. Next, add items that will help you relax, whether you are getting ready for your day, or relaxing in a nice hot bath at the end of your day. Try having a radio/CD player to listen to music to get your day going or unwind before going to bed. Candles are also nice if you want to have the soft light and pleasant scents while you are relaxing in the tub. Also, try using baskets or glass jars to place on the sink or on the shelf, to neatly store items which are used often. Make-up, cotton balls, and wash cloths, should be stored neatly with easy access. Having these items clutter your bathroom will not make your space a relaxing one. If you are decorating a bathroom for children, you will want brighter colors. If it is a uni-sex bathroom, I prefer soft green colors to coordinate with both pinks and blues. There are so many themes to choose from, especially animal themes. Rubber ducks, garden animals, jungle animals, sea animals, or even bugs are very popular bathroom themes for children. Most have matching towels, rugs, shower curtains, and soap dishes. There are a few things that you can add in a child’s bathroom for convenience, safety, and to eliminate clutter. Try securing towel hooks low enough on the wall so that they are easy for children to reach. Decorative bath rugs or bath tub mats will add color to their bathroom, and will help prevents falls. And, for easy clean up for bath toys or soaps and shampoos, try using storage buckets with suction cups to stick inside the tub or on the wall. Children also like having a step stool to stand high enough to use the bathroom sink. You can even paint designs on it yourself to coordinate with the theme. For a guest bathroom, there is one thing to try and keep in mind. . . storage! Your guests will want a place to easily store their bathroom belongings during their stay in your home. Adding a small wall mounted cabinet, shelves, or baskets will give them more storing space. You can place extra bars of soap and extra hand towels and wash cloths on the shelves or in the baskets for their convenience. Also, you will want a place to neatly store plenty of towels. Try using a large basket that will hold towels neatly rolled inside, and extra towel hooks for them to hang after using. You can find bars with multiple towel hooks that hang right over your door!Whatever the purpose of your bathroom, using these simple ideas will have you, your children, or your guests, enjoying the bathroom! These ideas will provide style and function in a room that we use for so many reasons, several times a day. Why should it be a boring space any longer?

Bathroom Remodeling Tips For The Holidays

December 28th, 2009

If you’re having company over for the holidays, no doubt you’re also cleaning your house from top to bottom, and even thinking about doing some light remodeling. If you plan ahead, it is possible to redo parts of your home, including the bathroom. The guest bathroom is a popular room to remodel right before the holidays (probably because it’s the one room in the house that receives the most amount of traffic when holiday guests visit). No one wants their guests to see an out-dated or dilapidated bathroom. So, right before the holidays hit, many households undergo a bathroom remodel.
The bathroom can be a simple OR enormous remodeling job. If you scrap everything, it’s going to take a while to remodel. But, if you just want to spruce things up a bit, your remodeling job can be quite easy. Here are some quick bathroom remodeling tips you can do before the holidays.
Fresh Paint
Giving your bathroom a new coat of paint is a great way to liven up the style of your bathroom. Changing the color or at least retouching the current color will help your bathroom shine. Over the years, your paint can dull, chip, and even stain. A fresh layer of paint will give your bathroom a new look. However, if you plan on changing the color completely, keep in mind that you may also need to replace a few bathroom fixtures if you want everything to match.
A Mirror or Two
It’s no surprise that a bathroom mirror can add depth and illumination to your bathroom. By strategically placing a mirror on the wall, you can drastically change the mood and appearance of your room. However, you want to be careful that you don’t select a mirror that overpowers your décor. Some bathroom mirrors have ornate frames, so be sure to match the frame with the color and style of your bathroom.
A New Faucet
Installing a new bathroom sink and/or vanity might be a bit too much right before the holidays, but installing a new faucet isn’t. In fact, a new contemporary bathroom faucet might just be the thing your bathroom needs. Your faucet get’s a lot of use. Eventually, it’s tarnished, chipped, and covered with water stains. Today, bathroom faucets come in many different shapes, sizes, and designs; so you have a large assortment to select from. And installation is a lot easier than installing a new sink and vanity. Just make sure you select a faucet that has the same configuration as your current one. If not, you might need to make a few extra holes in your counter top, which adds time and work. Consult a plumber/home improvement specialist for details.
The holidays are a joyous time. But they can also be a bit stressful. Don’t add to your stress by trying to redo your entire bathroom. Do a quick remodel by adding some paint, a mirror or two, and even possibly replacing that out-dated faucet.

Go Sleek For Your New Bathroom Vanity

December 19th, 2009

When redecorating your bathroom there are many different settings you need to keep in mind, and many different components you need to consider. The color scheme, overall feel, and the emotion your bathroom gives off are just the beginning. For example, do you want a clean sterile bathroom, a homey welcoming guest bathroom, or a cutely themed bathroom? You will have to decide on the overall theme before you can proceed any farther in the process. After you make this decision, there is one key piece of your bathroom that can either make or break your theme, the bathroom vanity. Think about it, besides the toilet the number one thing people see when they enter the bathroom is the bathroom vanity. After using the restroom almost everyone stops to check their appearance in the mirror. Rather it is a female adjusting their makeup, or a male checking to see if his shirt is tucked in properly, the mirror is the center of attention in your bathroom. Even public restrooms usually have bathroom vanity mirrors, even if they lack any presence besides tacky on the side of a cement wall. Obviously this is the feel you want for your own bathroom, but you can be sure that people will notice if you pick your mirror out in haste because this one wall hanging is either going to make or break the theme of your restroom. If you want an impressive bathroom, you are going to have to start with the bathroom vanity. Bathrooms can be cheap and inexpensive to decorate since the bathroom furniture is most likely not going to need changing as the sink, toilet, and shower are usually going to stay fixed to the walls. Thus all you really need are a few accessories and a new layer of paint. Therefore, there is only one expensive centerpiece to your bathroom décor that you actually need to think about for more than a minute, the bathroom vanity. This is going to require thought and consideration if you want your final product to be sleek and shiny. You can make the rest of your decorations out of this world, but if the visual focus does not sell your guests, then you have missed the mark. For a sleek and fashionable bathroom, you are going to want to choice a nice gold or silver plated bathroom vanity depending on the color of your blinds/curtains and overall theme. Metals are nice in the bathroom because they typically are waterproof and clearly stand out against the stark white colors of a typical bathroom. Bathrooms that are made with stainless steel fixtures look especially nice with the compliment of a silver bathroom vanity. In the same way, if your fixtures are a brassy color you might go with a gold plate. Whichever you choose, make sure that the metal fits into the general color scheme of the bathroom if you want to create a cohesive overall effect. With a little time and effort, you can have a bathroom that is just as impressive as the rest of your home.
